Use the + button in the Library, or drag a file onto the window (iPad and Mac). You can also open a file from the Files app, Mail, or Safari with “Open in DjVuReader”. Imported files are copied into the app so they stay available offline.

Open a document and tap the search button (or the page number at the bottom, then the Search tab). DjVuReader searches the document’s hidden text layer and shows a match count with next / previous navigation and on-page highlights.

Some scans are image-only with no embedded text layer. Long-press the page to run on-device text recognition (OCR) with Apple’s Vision framework, then select and copy the recognised text. OCR runs entirely on your device.

Bookmarks are included for everyone. Lifetime Unlock enables annotation: tap the annotate button to draw highlighter or pen ink with Apple Pencil or your finger. Ink, bookmarks, and reading position stay local and survive relaunch. Sharing the original file leaves it unchanged.

You can import and read up to three DjVu, PDF, or EPUB documents in full; bundled samples do not count. Search, zoom, reading layouts, bookmarks, and RTL reading remain free. One non-consumable Lifetime Unlock enables an unlimited library, annotations, PDF export, printing, and Read Aloud. There is no subscription.

Open Settings, choose Lifetime Unlock, then Restore Purchases while signed in to the Apple Account that bought it. Reading itself remains available offline; purchase and restore require an App Store connection.

On your device only, inside the app’s private storage. Nothing is uploaded or synced. Removing a document from the Library deletes the app’s copy along with its saved reading position and bookmarks.

DjVuReader decodes the standard DjVu codecs (JB2 masks, IW44 photo layers, FGbz palettes, baseline-JPEG layers, MMR masks, thumbnails, text, outline, and annotations). A small set of non-baseline JPEG sub-variants — progressive, arithmetic, lossless, 12-bit, and CMYK — are unsupported by design and degrade to a blank layer rather than failing. If a whole document fails to open, use the in-reader problem report to capture the technical detail.

That’s expected. DjVuReader detects identical files by content and opens the existing copy instead of making a second one.

Reading position, bookmarks, and ink are tied to the imported copy. If you deleted and re-imported the document, those are intentionally cleared with the old copy. They are never stored off-device, so they can’t be recovered from a server.
